Just wanted to sing it some more praises. Note: The Horror World of Junji Ito collection (aka THWOJI or Kyoufu Collection) is a 16 volume series. I know he's commented before he feels like he's burnt out and thinks his recent work isn't as good, but honestly I think Layers of Fear is among the best he's ever done. Layers of Fear kinda' does this at well, but I think it's one of the best "cut-off" endings Ito's done, with the last shot actually being really haunting and raising all sorts of possibilities in the mind with where it could go, giving new things to think about right at the end while also answering some things but leaving some big but interesting unknowns so it kinda' sticks with you.

A lot of Ito's works I think have a problem with endings, some of his works have amazing endings, but a number of them I feel don't really know how to end so they just kinda' cut off abruptly. I think it all at once is darkly fascinating, has strong actually nauseating human horror in the mother character, abstract visual body horror that's fueled by the human element to be more impactful with what's going on, making this fun contrast of something that's more grounded while also having this absurd impossible but creepy thing introduced, and I think ended at the perfect spot. Only just read it and I think it's among my favorites that he's done.
